In response to the executive order issued by Utah Governor Spencer Cox on June 25, Providence City administration has chosen to support banning the use of personal fireworks for the upcoming Independence Day weekend.

Utah is experiencing one of the worst wildfire seasons in recent history, causing state officials to temporarily allow local governments the authority to make their own fireworks restrictions decisions. The executive order applies through July 5, when conditions will be reevaluated ahead of the Pioneer Day holiday on July 24.

Several fires are burning throughout Utah and many fire crews from Cache Valley have been deployed to assist. This has limited the fire management resources available in the area. Because Providence City contracts with Logan City for fire protection rather than operating its own fire department, the City does not have sufficient firefighting resources available should a fireworks-related fire occur. After evaluating current conditions, Logan City Fire Chief Nate Thompson and Providence City Mayor Kathleen Alder agreed that a complete ban on personal fireworks is the safest course of action.

“I appreciate the support of people who understand that fire is a major problem this year,” Alder said. “Thank you for understanding our need to keep our citizens safe.”

Any resident who lights personal fireworks will be subject to a fine. Sparklers under 12 inches and snappers are considered “exempt explosives” by the Utah State Code, and are still permitted as they are not classified as fireworks. All previously scheduled commercial shows are still planned, though none are being held in Providence.

In addition, the State of Utah has entered Stage 2 fire restrictions for all Forestry, Fire and State lands. These restrictions prohibit open fires or charcoal grills. Accordingly, Providence City has closed the fire pit at Von Baer Park and the charcoal grills at all city parks.
